Hi Obolers,
There may be a few more birds out there but that is the number of birds found at one primary lek. I made it sound like that is the total number of birds total in that entire area. I hope they don't give up and leks are tough to find and require time.
Unless multiple numbers of birds are seen leks, winter is a good time to see large flocks after a heavy snowfall. This forces the birds to come down to lower elevations to feed on buds from ornamental birch trees where they are more conspicuous. Micheal Dossett and I have seen as many as 40 plus birds in Conconully, WA clamboring and actively feeding on water birch trees within 40 feet from us. The population here has done well with as many as 50 plus birds seen this winter in comparsion with the Wallowa flock.
