We just got back from a glorious 5 days in Maui (while it snowed in Astoria!). While the focus was not only birding, I did manage to get some lifers. Have to admit that it was a bit depressing to see all the non-natives. I also had to try pretty hard to get 40 species.
Japanese White-eyes and Common Mynas have thoroughly filled multiple niches in urban forest, shrub and dryland habitats, while Spotted Doves and Zebra doves are extremely abundant in all but the wet forests and upcountry areas. Common Mynas in particular seem to be extremely adaptable; I saw them acting like robins, starlings, pigeons, flycatchers, crows, jays, and gulls, depending on the habitat.
Below is my list for the trip -- native species are asteriscized; anyone wanting more details please reply offline. Many thanks to those of you who provided the invaluable tips.
