I've been playing around with an open source mapping server, looking
to integrate it into birdnotes, and came up with the following:
http://birdnotes.net/foo
(hey, I said it was a demo)
It lets you enter a species, then uses a heuristic algorithm to shade
counties in the state with an approximation of "where in the state is
this species hard, or easy, to find".
Don't take it too seriously, though joel geier seems to think my
heuristic does a pretty good job, given the limitations of the data
available in birdnotes.
Check it out if you'd like, and post feedback here. Are maps fun?
Useless? Have a mapping idea to share?
