Yes, I have to confess, I've never seen storks in Europe before. It's
not all that amazing when you consider that 95% of my time in Europe has
been in Fennoscandia, where storks do not regularly occur.
But this was for me one of my favorite kinds of lifers: A species that I
was not at all looking for, which I'd forgotten could occur in the area
where I was travelling, but which was absolutely unmistakeable once I
saw it. Not just one bird, but a whole series of them, all the way from
Nancy to Strasbourg.
And on top of that, this is a bird species with cultural connotations
that go far beyond a mere tick on a life list.
