[obol] Scaup question

We were in Astoria last weekend I observed about 30 Greater Scaup.  I
noticed that 2 female Greater Scaup, at the base of their bill it a rich tan
color instead of white. I can't find any comments about it in any books.

Also observed, 2 Lesser Scaup males, 8 pairs of Buffelheads, 10 Surf
Scoters, and 1 pair of American Wigeons.
