Columbia Estuary Report - 02/01/2008

A genuine EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was in the mixed wigeon/teal
at Wireless Rd this morning.  Lots and lots of gulls in the fields
as well.

Steve Warner and I did dead bird counts at Del Rey yesterday and
today.  We found NO BIRDS yesterday.  We found 11 today on the same
bit of beach.  

The count:
 Western Grebe (wings, no hd or ft)                         1
 Im Glaucous-winged Gull (wings only)                       2
 Western Gull (adult, wing only)                            1
 Northern Fulmar                                            5 
 small dark alcid (wings only, prob Marbled Murrelet)       2

We attribute the difference to a steady on-shore wind and a monster
storm surge drive couple of tide cycles.
