I wonder how the GBBC counters who reported rare species classified their birding skills.  For instance, it is common for people I have known who are not birders  to call scrub jays blue jays without giving it a thought.

I classify myself as a "good" birder even though I have birded for over twenty years because I do not have the skills to determine subtle differences in some species. Maybe some birders are not aware of their own limitations in ID'ing birds.

Just a thought.
