A dime a dozen not far south of here perhaps, a few minutes ago I saw my first-ever obvious LESSER GOLDFINCH, a male, in Columbia County. It was in a feeder in my yard with a couple of SISKINS. Glad to read that the EVENING GROSBEAKS are being seen locally, as well, as reported by John R. I don't want to hog the flock that has been visiting my yard on and off all winter. Please borrow my Cooper's hawk too, John, which is still successfully preying on my backyard birds in spite of thick protective shrubs close by.
Cool: a pair of BALD EAGLES have been very interested in the tall firs in a small woodlands right by my house. I can hear them calling right now thru the closed windows. They've been perching in the trees this past week -- checking out nesting possibliities? Only problem is new owner who is building a home on that 5-acre property. I hope the activity doesn't scare the eagles off.
While obolers are continuing to travel here to see the TREE SPARROW near the yellow house on Scappoose bottoms, look across the field (north) at that same location to see the heron rookery -- close to 50 nests last year. Nests are very visible right now because the trees are still bare. Lona Pierce, Warren
