The 3rd Applegate-Williams area raptor survey was completed today (02-20-08). Route is along the roads surrounding the towns of Murphy and Williams, Josephine Co.
Total of 37.0 miles; 3.5 hours; weather: mostly overcast to partly cloudy. Found were:
Red-tailed Hawk - 19
American Kestrel - 6
Cooper's Hawk - 1
Golden Eagle - 2 (in flight near each other; just into Jackson Co)
No Kites or Red-shouldered Hawk detected today. Saw a distant Hawk in flight that I was not able to pin a label on. It could have been a Rough-legged, but not sure at all. The bird had dark colored wing tips on the underside of the wings, but was not a male Harrier. Appeared to be some white at the base of the tail feathers, but not a lot. Rough-leggeds are a "rare" Hawk for Josephine Co.
Others of interest: 1 EURASIAN-COLLARED DOVE along New Hope road near New Hope School. At the same location as seen last year doing the raptor counts. 1 CALIFORNIA TOWHEE along Williams Highway in habitat that wouldn't be consider typical for them.
