I took a friend of mine who wants to learn more about
birds out to some of my favorite spots along Yaquina
Bay. It was fun to share the experience with someone
who gets excited about seeing even the most common
species of ducks, loons, and grebes. The Red-breasted
Mergansers were a big hit. Couldn't seem to get her
interested in gulls though :-)
Probably the most noteworthy finds were:
1. A lone Whimbrel foraging along the first finger of
the south jetty
2. A Rufous Hummingbird near Sallys Bend (they haven't
made it to my backyard yet)
3. We got a very close and extended look at a small
flock of wigeon at Sallys Bend. Among them we found 2
male Eurasian Wigeon and I'm 99.9% sure 1 female
Eurasian Wigeon (based primarily on comparisons to
Sibley illustrations).
Raptors were scarce.
