Hi OBOL,
I saw in the newspaper yesterday that the Oregon State
Marine Board is considering letting a jet boat race
happen on large stretches of the Willamette River. The
race is potentially lined up for Memorial Day weekend.
They are currently taking comments on whether or not
to grant the race permit.
Here's the link to the newspaper story:
http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080226/OUTDOORS/802260322/1034
Here's how to comment:
WHAT: Public comment on a series of world championship
jet-boat races proposed for Memorial Day weekend.
THE RACE: About 30 to 40 jet boats.
THE EFFECT: Sections of the river would be closed to
all other uses for specified periods. (Somebody better
tell the birds...)
MAY 24: Closure of 1.5 miles of the Willamette River
1-6 p.m. on the Albany waterfront.
MAY 25: Closure 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. of the Willamette
River from Bowman Park in Albany for 61 miles upriver
to the Valley River Inn, in Eugene.
MAY 26: Closure 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. of the Willamette
River from Bowman Park downriver to the confluence of
the Santiam River, then upriver on the main Santiam to
the confluence of the North Santiam River, and then
upriver on the South Santiam to Gills Landing boat
ramp in Lebanon.
COMMENTS: The Oregon State Marine Board is accepting
written public comment on whether the proposed race,
run by the Southern Oregon Power Boat Association,
should be permitted. Comments must be received by
March 31 and should be directed to to June LeTarte,
Oregon State Marine Board, P.O. Box 14145, Salem, OR,
97309; or e-mailed to june.letarte at state.or.us; or
sent by fax to (503) 378-4597. Comments by telephone
will not be accepted.

I just wanted to get this out there. I don't think
it's appropriate, and will comment on that in my
letter to the OSMB.
Thanks,
Kat in Eugene
