As reported up Newport way, the first southbound shorebirds are back. Out on the north spit of Coos Bay I saw a flock of 38 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and heard a single SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER fly overhead. There was a WHIMBREL around on 6/29, but it could have been a non-breeder. Also out on the spit are several broods of GADWALL and RING-NECKED DUCKS. The 5 BUFFLEHEAD and 6 GREATER SCAUP are still hanging around, a few non-breeders have oversummered annually in recent years. There was also a juvie BLACK PHOEBE flycatching.

Have a great July all!!
