We too had a group of WESTERN SANDPIPERS on the beach at Coos Bay North
Spit yesterday 6/30 - our first group we have seen coming south. Also
heard a distant GREATER YELLOWLEGS over the bay. As far as WHIMBRELS
go, there have been at least 8 hanging out at Bandon Beach State Natural
Area all summer, so I think most Whimbrels around are likely oversummering.

Cheers

> As reported up Newport way, the first southbound shorebirds are back. Out on the north spit of Coos Bay I saw a flock of 38 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and heard a single SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER fly overhead. There was a WHIMBREL around on 6/29, but it could have been a non-breeder. Also out on the spit are several broods of GADWALL and RING-NECKED DUCKS. The 5 BUFFLEHEAD and 6 GREATER SCAUP are still hanging around, a few non-breeders have oversummered annually in recent years. There was also a juvie BLACK PHOEBE flycatching.
