I am writing to let you know that this August (5-9), Portland is going to 
host a joint meeting of American Ornithologist Union, Cooper 
Ornithological Society, and Canadian Society of Ornithologists.  The local 
steering committee is primarily made up of faculty and staff from OSU, PSU 
and WASU.  This international meeting will attract around 1,000 
ornithologists from North, Central, and South America as well as folks 
from Europe and Asia.  This is the 125th anniversary of the founding of 
the AOU, the oldest Ornithological Society in North America.  With the 
increasing technical nature of birding and the expansion of citizen 
science opportunities through programs like eBird, more of you than ever 
are interested in and contributing directly to the science and 
conservation of birds.  If you'd like a peak at hardcore avian science, 
you might consider attending portions of the meeting.  At the very least 
you can browse titles and abstracts for talks online.  The meeting web 
site contains all the details, including a list of all plenary speakers, 
special symposium and general session talks  (http://www.pdxbirds08.org/). 
 Also, there is an opportunity to purchase t-shirts and hoodies on the web 
site.  In addition to t-shirts, but not listed on the web site, we are 
selling copies of the attached poster for $5.  Unless you live in the 
Corvallis area and can pick the poster up, please include your mailing 
address and $3 for shipping.  The steering committee commissioned local 
artist Ram Pampish to produce both the meeting logo and the poster (both 
of which are printed on the shirts and hoodies).  Funds help defray 
meeting costs and support student programs run by each society.  If any of 
you are interested in purchasing the poster, you can send a check made out 
to AOU-PDX08 to me at the address below.  The deadline for ordering 
posters is July 15th.
