On the brighter side, the Waldport High School osprey chicke made their maiden (I think) last Saturday.? There was lots of screaming and excitement, including some from the gulls on the next pole over - encouragement?? Today, they seemed to have made it safely back to the nest and are awaiting handouts from the parents.

Subject: [obol] 2nd failed osprey nest; Sandy Delta reopening

Hello:
It appears that another OSPREY NEST has been abandoned mid-season in
my area. This one is on NE 122nd between Sandy Blvd and Airport Way
(closer to Airport Way), just behind the U-Haul Office on a metal tower.

A pair of osprey successfully bred in it last year. A pair settled in
again this year, but several drive-bys have yielded no action other
than lots of starlings hanging around it.

That makes two abandoned nests within just a few miles of each other,
both of which have been successful in the past. A worrisome thing to me.

The SANDY RIVER DELTA will be reopening tomorrow, Saturday, June 28.
The National Guard apparently will be taking a break from building
the new parking lot until after the 4th. Work will begin anew July 7,
with occasional closures possible when the big equipment is on the move.

However, there will be no parking along Jordan Road (which is where
people have been parking since the old lot closed) after the 4th, and
actually it is discouraged even now. Visitors will have to park
elsewhere, the closest being on the other side of the highway. That
means walking along the road under the I-84 overpass, which is kind
of dicey.

No word yet on when the new parking lot and deceleration lane will be
completed.
