Today was a Birding Day of Obligation for me so the dog and I went up to
Mt Hood to try our luck. We had planned to walk to Timothy Lake from Little
Crater Lake, but the mosquitoes were too thick. In our few minutes at
Little Crater Lake, we did hear several WILSON'S SNIPE calling and came
across a pair of very agitated LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, suggesting we were
too near their nest.
We then went up to Wapinitia Pass and hiked in to Lower and Upper Twin
Lakes. A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen drumming near
Lower Twin Lake. Three BARROW'S GOLDENEYES (eclipse males, I think)
were on Lower Twin. A PILEATED WOODPECKER was also nearby.
A HAIRY WOODPECKER was near Upper Twin Lake.
We heard about 5 HERMIT WARBLERS, a couple of HERMIT THRUSHES,
and several flocks of CROSSBILLS--RED, I suppose, although Western Hemlock
is the dominant species for much of the trail so it seems like it
would be a good
place for White-winged.
