Hi All,
Just got back from an awesome week on Siltcoos Lake. Got to observe the
eagle family. Two eaglets sucessfuly fledged. Mom (or Dad?) appeared
for a little while daily. Juvies started on longer and longer forays.
Also saw Osprey and mergansers and also alot of LBBs. Do Oregon Eagles
migrate later? And where do they go?

The only interesting birds I am getting in my back yard these days are
male and female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS. I assume they are nesting
nearby and I look forward to seeing some chicks soon. This is the first
year I have seen them stick around.
I wonder where the hummingbirds are. I've seen none in my yard.

I am still getting both RUFOUS and ANNA's hb in my yard as well as the
BLACK HEADED GROSBEAK, good numbers of AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and HOUSE
FINCH.
I was dismayed to look out my window the other morning and see a
WESTERN SCRUB JAY dive bomb my feeder, spooking the AMERICAN GOLDFINCH,
one of which ran into the window, the W. SCRUB JAY then picked up the
stunned A. GOLDFINCH and flew off with it, before I could chase it
off. Is this common W. SCRUB JAY behavior?

My wife Lisa Sheffield just called to say she had two American White
Pelicans fly over her car while on Youngs Bay bridge near Astoria.
The birds were last seen traveling west down the Columbia River.

We took the low trail along the river southward from the Arboretum that
continues into the open clearings beneath the power-lines. We found a
reticent RED-EYED VIREO that managed to produce enough song for
identification, but it then flew from the top of a very tall cottonwood
and
followed the river northward and out of our sight. The bird may have
been a
non-breeder, but this species should be looked (listened) for in this
area.
As it turned out, as Don Schrouder remarked, we found the Red-eyed
Vireo to
be more common than Warbling Vireos at Pisgah. We failed to see or
hear any

A birder friend of mine from California is going to be in the Portland
area this weekend. Actually, he will be staying in Newberg. He'd like
some advice on finding some target birds as well as where to maximize
his
time up here.
Could some of you with more familiarity with what's currently around
advise Chris? His email address is ctaylor at kiwifoto.com, or you could
send your suggestions to me at tc at empnet.com .

Hey Tom,
If you recall, I'll be visiting the Portland/Willamette Valley area this
4th of July weekend. Unfortunately I won't have much time to do any
photography/birding but I'm going to try and escape in the mornings to
areas that are relatively close to Willamette (we'll be staying in
Newberg).
These are some of the target birds/areas that caught my eye but having a
hard time figuring out what is nearby and "do-able" with the timeframe I
have. I guess my biggest target bird would have to be Gray Jay but are
any
of the following places I should definitely target or did I miss any
locations that may be good for the same species closer to Willamette?

* Black-headed Grosbeak
* Willow Flycatcher
Washington Cnty Wetlands - Fernhill Wetlands (p.61)

We were surprised to find a juvenile WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, probably
recently fledged, near the lower reservoir. To our knowledge, this is
the first time that they have bred in the park. This is a totally
unexpected breeder; we haven't seen them at Tabor since late April.
As we were biking we heard 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, a WESTERN TANAGER,
a couple of GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, many WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES, 2
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, many groups of PINE SISKINS, a SWAINSON'S
THRUSH (we saw two more elsewhere), and 3 PACIFIC- SLOPE FLYCATCHERS.
We assume that all of these species nest at Tabor, since several of
each have been hanging around all summer.
Fall migration seems to have arrived. We found 2 singing CASSIN'S
VIREOS and a BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER; presumably fall migrants
because they are the first ones we've found at Mt. Tabor since the
spring migrants left. RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS will probably be quite
numerous at Tabor again this fall; we found at least 5 today.
Additionally, we found an adult GREAT-HORNED OWL and we heard a LAZULI
BUNTING.
Other recent birds at Tabor included two singing TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS on
the 21st.
Also, though not at Tabor, we heard a COMMON NIGHTHAWK at Gales Creek
Camp (Washington County) on June 28th.

Anyway, thought this might be of interest to NW Birders et. al.

OBOLites:
A birder friend of mine from California is going to be in the Portland
area this weekend. Actually, he will be staying in Newberg. He'd like
some advice on finding some target birds as well as where to maximize
his
time up here.
Could some of you with more familiarity with what's currently around
advise Chris? His email address is ctaylor at kiwifoto.com, or you could
send your suggestions to me at tc at empnet.com .
Thanks!
Hey Tom,
If you recall, I'll be visiting the Portland/Willamette Valley area this
4th of July weekend.
Washington Cnty Wetlands - Jackson Bottom Wetland Preserve
(p.60)
* Black-headed Grosbeak
* Willow Flycatcher
Washington Cnty Wetlands - Fernhill Wetlands (p.61)
* Violet-green Swallow
* Black-headed Grosbeak
Portland Metro - Sandy River Delta (p.63)
* Black-headed Grosbeak
* Red-eyed Vireo
* Eastern Kingbird
* Bullock's Oriole
Portland Metro - Powell Butte Nature Park (p.66)
* Lazuli Bunting (nesting)
Portland Metro - Forest Park (p.70)
* Black-capped Chickadee
* Chestnut-backed Chickadee
* Black-headed Grosbeak
* Winter Wren
* Song Sparrow (Dusky ssp.)
* Hutton's Vireo
* Red Crossbill
Larch Mountain (p.71)
* Willow Flycatcher
* MacGillivray's Warbler
* Pileated Woodpecker
* Northern Pygmy-Owl
* Clark's Nutcracker
* Gray Jay
Tillamook Bay Area - Barview Park (p.125)
* Brandt's Cormorant
* Pelagic Cormorant
* Wrentit
Tillamook Bay Area - Kilchis Park (p.126)
* American Dipper
* Winter Wren
Tillamook Bay Area - Bayocean Spit (p.128)
* Wrentit
* Red Crossbill
Tillamook Bay Area - Cape Meares State Park (p.129)
* Varied Thrush
* Wrentit
* Chestnut-backed Chickadee
* Tufted Puffin
Thanks for any input you can offer, appreciate it!
Chris

Sorry for the duplicate messages. I am on the road and using an
unfamiliar path to the internet.
Lots of Cardinals, Blue Jays, Red-bellied Woodpeckers where I'm at. The
best bird so far is a Mississippi Kite, but I'd rather see that at
Malheur.
Have a happy, birdy 4th.

Hi OBOL!
I found a dead bird and am curious as to what it is. I recently started
a
blog page, and I am hoping this link will work to take you there & see
the
post w/ pictures. I have the specimen so any other questions, I can
probably
answer.

Thanks!
