Wilson Cady's sighting of six
Catbirds at Trout Lake points out the
exciting possibilities close to Portland.
I heard Veerys along the river in Trout Lake
no more than 200m north of the gas station
when I was working there about 15 years ago.
That would have been very late May or June.
June 19 of this year I saw a pair of
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERS at milepost 40 on
Hwy 97 in Washington State. This is several
miles into Yakima County. There is a large
pullout here on the east side of the road.
It was after dusk and I flushed them from
bushes as I was picking elder flowers.
The Simcoe Mtns north of Goldendale
offer forest like the Blue Mtns more than
the Cascades. They are not really visible
from I 84, but it's only a thirty minute
drive to Satus Pass (el 3000 ft). The riparian
vegetation along Satus Creek is quite luxuriant,
and again more typical of parts of Oregon
that are a much greater distance from our
west side. Lars Norgren
