We took another trip up the Columbia River Slough before the river drops to
lower levels and witnessed an unbelievable Canada Goose happening.
As we approached a family unit of Canada Geese we violated they're comfort
zone (at a very slow and unintentional pace). They elected to take flight,
this could have been part of the flight training for the kids. All of the
geese were in adult plumage. Much to our amazement the "runt" could not
become airborne. He ran across the top of the water in fine goose fashion
with wings flapping, only to crash head long after 20' and sink. We stopped
the boat to see if he would surface. Finally in the area were this all
started we saw a head (the head only). Our first submarine goose. Then the
head went under never to be seen again. I didn't know goose bodies would
stay under for extended periods without bobbing back to the surface. Has
anyone ever seen anything like is?
On a lighter note we also saw a doe with twins on North Hayden Island. The
twins appeared to be very young, 2 weeks maybe.
Warm Regards,
