I went back today for a closer look at the mounted shorebird. It is a Whimbrel. I was able to check the underside of the primaries, which were heavily barred. Photos at johnrakestraw.net. While disappointed, at least now I can stop obsessing.

I found a mounted shorebird in the visitor's center of a little bird sanctuary in Maine. I figure it is one of two species, but the mount is in bad condition so I would like the opinion of others. Photos can be seen at johnrakestraw.net.
