OBOL,
This is my 3rd summer here at Portland Airport and each July there has
been a noticeable push of CALIFORNIA GULLS in July. After being mostly
absent in May and June, they start moving through in July headed
downstream (westward) in small groups (5-15). This morning a bigger
group of 110 was cruising down the Columbia River. The only foraging I
have seen during this season is occasional aerial hawking of insects,
they generally are just cruising on by.
On a side note for Multnomah County birders, this will probably be my
last OBOL post from *inside the fence* at PDX. I have taken a new job,
but I will miss birding this 2000 acre *prairie* in the heart of
Portland and sharing my sightings with all the local birders. I expect
to keep getting reports of odd stuff out here from the wildlife staff
and will pass along local RBAs to OBOL in future.
