Hello OBOL ,
I seem to remember back in..... well a long time ago, when I was At
OMSI's Hancock FS, that Great Horned Owl young do a screech sounding
call similar to a Barn Owl. I've been hearing that call in the trees
around my place for as long as I've been down here for the Summer
(abt a Month). (And for years now)
I've listened to the Barn Owl call on the Peterson recordings and
it's similar, and I've seen Barn Owl out here, but I'm thinking that
the call is actually GHOW young being persistent little beggars,
similar how a begging Juv gull acts towards its parents. I can
distinguish at least 2 individuals calling. Last night I saw GHOW
Fly into a tree at my place in Ada (Oregon) just at dusk. I had left
the house w/o binos to walk down to the lake (Siltcoos Lake) and saw
it land on a branch. When It finally flew away I could make out a
silhouette of some sort of varmint in it's talons. Cripes... i never
go to the lake without Binos....arrrgh.
Anyway could someone comment on the Barn Owl-like screech call of
Juv GHOW? Or am I remembering wrong.
Best,
Vern
