At about 7 pm today, July 18, I was parked at the pull-out overlooking
the main pond at the Alexandre Dairy in Del Norte County, when a small
falcon came flying by. I was first alerted to the presence of the bird
by the calls it made during flight. The calls sounded somewhat like
"keet" and were made repeatedly during it's flight. The bird flew fast
and struck me as having very long, narrow wings. It landed on a snag in
a dead tree south of the pond and during fairly brief scope views, I
noticed it had white cheeks, a white throat, a black cap and a narrow
black malar stripe, a narrow white line above the eye and a dark back. I
could not see the lower part of the bird as it was hidden behind another
tree limb. after a few minutes the bird flew off along the trees
bordering the creek there and I lost sight of it and could not relocate
it. I am fairly certain that this was an Eurasian Hobby, which is pretty
outrageous, but not impossible. I hope that it will be refound, and
perhaps this may encourage people to go try to find it.
