OBOL,

Here's some additional info about the Coos/Sunset Beach bird.

We were facing east waiting to check in so the sun was at our backs in the late afternoon when this robin sized bird flew across the break in the mature mixed conifer and deciduous trees. The view was a side view of the bird about 50 feet off the ground. Can I describe the flight details-no. I was just sitting in the car looking over an area I had never really observed before even though I have driven by it a number of times over the years. What struck be was my reaction to the flight--that's a woodpecker--the slender, straight, long, pointed bill and undisturbed flight with full wing beats on a bird having the overall look of one. I didn't notice where on the wings the white occurred, but my memory is that I tended to see it more at the bottom of the wing stroke when I would have been looking at the top of the wing. It took me a moment to realize a white-headed might not be logical for the area and I should be more observant and by that time the bird was over 1/2 way across.
