I birded Sauvie Island in Columbia County on May 31st from 1:30 pm until
8:00 pm and had some interesting birds.
Along Rentenaar Road at the shore bird flats there was a gorgeous
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER in breeding plumage.
In addition a heard and carefully observed SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER in the
gray plumage of winter. It was not transitioning to breeding plumage.
It was with a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER in breeding plumage.
Other shorebirds present at this spot were 4 WILSON'S PHALAROPE, 1
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 6 KILLDEER and several winnowing COMMON SNIPE.
There were 8 BLUE-WINGED TEAL at the shorebird flats. At the
observation platform there were 7 BLUE-WINGED TEAL for a total of 15 for
the area. Ten were males.
I walked the dike to the west and east. To the east there was a
RED-EYED VIREO singing, but I could not see it. A YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD and a COMMON RAVEN were to the west. It seems a bit odd that
it is hanging around. Several weeks ago I watched it continually diving
on a Coyote.
At the observation platform there were 12 Great Egret present as well as
a RUDDY DUCK.
