Dear Jim,

Thanks for making your photos available. Your sighting is
actually the third report for Oregon. The report of the Eastern Towhee from
West Linn on 3 Apr 2001 was accepted by the OBRC. See
http://www.oregonbirds.org/obrc_accepted_2008.html. There was also a bird
that was seen by Gerard Lillie and Jeff Gilligan on Mt. Tabor in Portland on
1 Apr 2004. There were two relatively poor quality photos of that bird that
were taken. There were no spots that were clearly seen on the bird in the
photos, but the OBRC didn't accept that record largely due to the fact that
the bird didn't have a white patch at the base of the primaries or white
tertial edges either. Reportedly about 10% of Eastern Towhees don't have a
white patch at the base of the primaries, but the OBRC didn't feel
comfortable accepting the record because there was a general consensus that
the bird could have simply been a Spotted Towhee that was "spotless". Some
Spotted Towhees don't seem to show that many white spots on them.

Sincerely,

Tim Janzen

Portland

Alan Contreras kindly posted two of my photos of the Eastern Towhee on his
weblog.

I now believe that this is the second report of an Eastern Towhee in Oregon,
although the first report in 2005 was not accepted by the OBRC.

As far as I can tell, this would be the first record for Oregon if accepted
by the OBRC. There are two accepted records in both Arizona and Idaho.
There are no records for California, Washington or Nevada. It is a review
species in New Mexico and Colorado.
