The parula was still around as of 5PM on Tuesday
afternoon. It had moved a bit north and was singing
from high up in a spruce. I never saw it but could
hear it well. I made a cursory check this morning but
did not hear it. Here are some directions for anyone
interested in looking for it:

Take the diked causeway out to the north spit which is
signed Horsfall Beach- this is north of the
McCullough bridge north of North Bend as you leave
town. Follow this about a mile and cross the
railroad tracks. Just past the tracks stay left and
follow Transpacific Road 2.7 miles and park off the
side of the road- you should be between the two gates
to the old Weyerhaeuser settling pond site on the west
side of the road (the BLM boat ramp is a bit further
down the road). The parula was on the east side of
the road over were a slough is and was singing from up
in the spruce trees. I recommend rain pants as the
grass is real wet and you'll have to crash through it
and tall scotch broom to get to the slough. Also, a
scope would be nice, especially if it's across the
slough and high up in the trees. Walking this whole
sloughy area may be advisable as the bird had moved
further north yesterday than it was the day before
(only about 100 yards though).

Also out there on 6/3 was a late HORNED GREBE. Other
late species include an AMERICAN PIPIT seen at New
River on 6/2 by Dave Lauten and Kathy Castelein making
that the latest Coos spring record I know of.

ENJOY!
