On my way back through the Coast Range after scouting a new Breeding Bird Survey route I just picked up, I saw an adult Barred Owl sitting on a telephone wire right along Hwy 36 about 0.4 mile west of the hamlet of Low Pass. I made quick U-turn and snapped off a couple quick pictures before the bird was flushed by another passing vehicle. I parked at the pullout to the refuse transfer site about 100 yards west of where the bird was on the wire and after getting out of the car I heard at least two begging owlets in the trees on the south side of the road opposite the entrance the transfer site. I also heard a couple Common Nighthawks at this site.

The community of Low Pass is at about mile post 35 along Hwy 36, which runs from Junction City to Mapleton.
