I read with amusement Rich Armstrong's comment on the lack of
participation by Oregon birders in the ABA List Supplement, and Dave
Lauten's reply. As a long-time member of ABA, I have submitted my lists
more years than not. (Had I done so this year, I believe I would have
been second on the Oregon list, although a look at the more accurate
state list in Oregon Birds would probably show I am somewhere in the
10th, 15th or maybe even the 20th position by now.) However, I have
found that submitting my lists has not done anything either to make me a
better birder or to increase my enjoyment of birding. As a school
teacher with a limited income, I long ago decided that competitive
listing is best suited for the doctors, lawyers and highly successful
business people among us. Nevertheless, I will occasionally submit my
lists when I feel like it, but certainly have no desire to do so every
year. I actually very much enjoy listing, but at the same time feel no
need to compete with anyone, and I will continue to support ABA
regardless.
