Hello All OBOL,
I'm down at the coast, (not to be confused with "Down With " the
coast) , for the summer and the past few days have been lousy with
wildlife.
Sunday as I was unloading, I saw what I think was a Townsends
Solitare. Can someone tell me the chances of that? It was Grey, and
the outer tail feathers were white, but I didn't see any buff on the
body. I'm keeping my eyes peeled, but haven't seen it again. That's
a yard bird here.
The Swainson's thrushes are numerous and calling and singing all
over. One of my favorite songs.
Yesterday there was an Otter at the (now unused) R/R trestle at Ada.
This year is a big hatch year for Mayflies. (In June)( How crazy
is THAT name??) Last night there were HUGE numbers at the lake
(Siltcoos). It reminded me of the Hitchcock film "The Birds", only
more... and quiet. When I turned about mid-trestle to walk back home,
It was as if I was walking into a snowstorm of Mayflies.
Today, I was held up by a road crew putting down a tar and rock
seal coat from Ada Grange to the county line. I watched a Black
Phoebe flycatching from a fence post at the Grange.
Tonight returning from town about 50yds from the house, I saw a
big black flash. I thought at first it wasn't a bear because I had
such a poor fleeting visual. Then across the road comes 2 Black Bear
cubs the size of large housecats. They each bolted for trees and then
one came out of it's tree to join it's sibling. I moved on fairly
quickly to not disturb them (or Mama). I've seen a lot of bear out
here over the years but never cubs so small. They were VERY cute. I
even found myself saying "ohhhh look at the babieeees", but don't
tell anyone.
best,
Vern
