Obolers,
On Sunday while the river is still high we went up the Columbia Slough from
the Willamette to the Vancouver Ave. bridge. We took friends in the River
Roadster, 13' Boston Whaler. Along the way Great Blue Herons were well
represented. I expected to see more Kingfishers as I hoped to photograph
them but 5 skittish birds was still fun to watch. Cliff Swallows were at
every bridge. The surprise bird for me was an immature Cormorant; the best
bird for our friends was a mature Bald Eagle that perched on power line
pole. This is the extension of the power line that runs through Smith Bybee
lakes. Other birds were one Great Egret, two Spotted Sandpipers, Tree and
Barn Swallows. Mrs Mallard with ducklings, a Red Tailed Hawk and several
fishing Osprey (one successful) kept us entertained. We arrived back at
the moorage just as the thunder storms started. A great day to be on the
jungle boat ride within the city limits.
