Sunday was a hot, hazy, and relatively quiet day at Fern Ridge. I biked out
throught the Wetlands and biked pretty much all the dikes at the refuge that
are open to the public. Highlights were about 50 AMERICAN PELICANS and a
pair of WILSON'S PHALAROPES. Just a few BLACK TERNS. Much of the refuge is
dried out, with only a relatively few marshy/pondy areas compared to
previous years (surprising in this abundant water year). No Black-necked
Stilts (despite having a number nesting in previous years) and only this one
pair of Phalaropes.. Does anyone know if there is better habitat for them
in the gated off areas? or over in the managed areas around the Cantrell
ODFW office? I miss the Stilts!
