The Crown Zellerbach Trail on the Scappoose lowlands was originally a logging railroad now turned linear trail. It extends all the way from the former old-growth log dumping site at the Multnomah Channel, and continues along the Scappoose-Vernonia Road eventually to Banks, Washington County, with a few "interesting" gaps. It is in the process of being developed as a groomed hiking, biking, and equestrian trail. It is not officially open yet but is hiked by locals.
The portion of the trail on the bottomlands that Jay W. is referring to can be accessed easily by parking on Bird Road off of Columbia Ave. just east of Scappoose, or by parking where Dike Road intersects Columbia Ave. There are marshlands worth investigating year round between these two points, and open fields. At Chapman Landing, where the trail ends at the channel, you can usually see nesting osprey close by and birds in the riparian trees. The CrownZ Trail on the bottomlands is well worth your time, if only to get out and stretch after taking the Honeyman loop. Lona Pierce, Warren in Columbia County
