OBOL'ers:
Just did a two-week road trip with my sister from Sacramento to SE
Arizona via the Salton Sea. We chased 6 or 7 rarities at the Salton Sea but
didn't find a single one. So we found our own:
- YELLOW-FOOTED GULL (adult at Salton Sea State Park)
- OSPREY (not listed on the SS Bird Checklist for ANY season)
- EASTERN PHOEBE
- ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER
On to Arizona where the best bird of the trip was observed, the NORTHERN
JACANA at the Casa Grande Golf Course. Other interesting birds observed in
AZ include (in taxonomic order):
- Crested Caracara--Marana pecan grove
- Whiskered Screech Owl--Madera Canyon--pointed out by Rich Hoyer,
whom I met along a trail and birded with for a couple of hours
- Northern Pygmy Owl that my sister and I found near Rich's owl spot.
- Elegant Trogan--male at Lake Patagonia
- 4 Arizona Woodpeckers--first heard by Rich
- Hammond's Flycatcher--heard, coaxed in, and ID'd by Rich
- 3 Vermilion Flycatchers--2 bright males and a female at Lake
Patagonia
- Olive Warbler--heard and coaxed in by Rich
- 2 Townsend's Warblers--same
- 2 Painted Redstarts--same
- 15 Baird's Sparrows--San Rafael Grasslands
The were many other AZ specialty birds observed, of course, but the above
were my favorites. And yes, Rich Hoyer is a bird magnet. Bird with him on
one of the tours he leads if you ever have the opportunity. You will be
amazed.
Good birding, Mike
