Late today at Yaquina Head an immature Brown Pelican
landed on Seal Rock annex, stayed for about 3 minutes,
then took off around the headland.
2 Harlequin Ducks roosted high and dry on the rocks at
the base of Lions Head for at least an hour.
A Peregrine Falcon surveyed things from the tip top of
South Rocks (a favorite spot) for a long while then
zoomed around the other side of the headland.
A frenzied mob of gulls alerted me to an adult eagle
cruising about....made several sweeps but never nabbed
anything that I could see...on the prowl for murres no
doubt....which made their debut on the rocks (with any
significance) last year March 29.
After the excitement, at least 4 Black Oystercatchers
got fussy. However, none were hanging out near any of
the nesting sites from last year. I walked Cobble
Beach but the pair that have been hanging out there
were not around but with 50-60 tourists on a good
weather weekend low tide, they didn't have a chance.
No murres in the water or on the rocks...but they have
been spotted recently.
While I was there, the gulls nor any other birds
showed any signs of courtship. Last year at this same
time, the gulls were showing showing subtle
signs...should be soon.
