12 March, our yard, north of Bandon, Coos Cty
PURPLE FINCHES have been at the feeder today for sure, and I am pretty
sure I saw one 2 days ago. Last week we were visited by about 6
SISKINS. The hummingbird feeders are hopping, but not as much as the
video posted the other day from Waldport. Both full rufous RUFOUS here,
and green-backed birds which some are most likely full on ALLEN'S,
others in between. ANNA's still visiting regularly too. Also, while
sitting in the hot top last evening, a mere 10 feet from the feeding
station, a sudden 'whoosh' came in, birds scrambled, a MOURNING DOVE
took off and smacked the window of the sun room, all because the
'whoosh' was a PEREGRINE FALCON attacking the feeder. The PEREGRINE
just missed getting the dove and nailing the window itself. It turned
up at the last second, up over the house. It returned 10 minutes later
for a second attack. I've seen lots of Peregrines attack, but I have
never been so close to the contact point. Indeed, the sound and sight
was impressive and somewhat startling! It snuck in from the south at
full tilt. Small male.
Cheers
