When I was in Mexico, on the Yucatan Penisula, there were literally 
dozens of male cardinals in cages for sale in the zocalo of every town 
we visited.  I was sad indeed.

I was back in Virginia for a month in January and seeing and hearing the 
cardinals made me realize how much I miss them. We always had resident 
birds on our property in NJ and the song is certainly one of the most 
beautiful in the world.  I can understand why people would keep them as 
cage birds, even though I do not approve.
