Hello, I am new to the list. I have been watching backyard birds for 10 years or so now. This year I have a bird I have not see before. The bird frequents my suet feeders, but avoids the other feeders. I see two or three at a time occasionally, but usually just one. It looks like a gray-blue version of an American Goldfinch, about the same size, dark to black beak, with finch like behaviors. The most distinctive feature I have been able to identify is its decidedly yellow rump. This shows only wings are fully spread and flapping. The yellow rump is diamond shaped, roughly speaking. I have scoured my books and the internet. I cannot find this one. According to what I have found in my research it is NOT: 1. a yellow rumped warbler, or any other warbler I can find, (although it certainly could be a warbler) 2. any sort of finch I can find. 3. a kinglet 4. a vireo 5. a siskin gone funky.
Can anyone give me a steer? It's here every day and making me nuts trying to identify it. Thanks for accepting the new guy to the list and one who is clearly lost in this search.
