Today (03-20-08) the 4th South Grants Pass raptor survey was accomplished.
Total of 3.0 hrs; 26.9 miles; weather: mostly cloudy, breezy at times.
Observed were:
Red-tailed Hawk - 5
American Kestrel - 4
Red-shouldered Hawk - 4
White-tailed Kite - 1
Osprey - 2
Turkey Vulture - 14
Lowest Red-tail count for the 4 periods. Made no detections in the lowlands near the Rogue River. High number of Red-shoulders for the 4 periods and they were in the lowlands along the Rogue River.
Watched two different Red-tails make runs on prey, both came up empty taloned. One did a quick turn on a blackish bird, which I thought it got, but afterwards landed on a pole with nothing. Watch a Kestrel making repeated aerial attacks on a Red-tail. It went on for some time until both flew out of sight.
Others of interest: 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, several VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS (my 1st for yr, but likely been here for a bit now, I'm late getting out to look for them), 1 RING-BILLED GULL (Gulls are not your everyday bird in JoCo land; appear to be moving through now).
