Noting that the weather forecasts were all wet, Robin Gage and I
decided to stop trying to reschedule the date for the
Harrisburg-Coburg raptor run in March and conducted it on Tuesday,
March 18. This is the latest we have ever run the route. We
experienced two short rain showers that required windshield wipers.
Early in the day, we used the intermittent wipers often but not
constantly. For the last couple of hours, the weather was completely
dry. The sun made an appearance for about the last hour. We spent 4
hours 25 minutes and drove 69.9 miles.
While the Bald Eagle and American Kestrel numbers were about the same
as they were on last year's March 14 count, Red-tailed Hawk numbers
plummeted from 19 to 9. Last month there were 23. The Northern
Harrier count was the highest for the season. Turkey Vultures were
more numerous (last year we found 11), and we had two Ospreys instead
of just one.
Results
9 Red-tailed Hawk
13 American Kestrel
4 Northern Harrier
21 Bald Eagle (8 adults, 13 immatures)
1 Sharp-shinned Hawk
18 Turkey Vulture
2 Osprey
