Today eight of us headed east from Bend in the chilly early morning and stopped a few times on the way to Burns. On the way we found singing SAGE SPARROW and saw a VESPER SPARROW. At Hampton there were lots of raptors including over 30 FERUGINOUS HAWKS and 20 BALD EAGLES .... one eagle had a ground squirrel sized lump in its crop! In the wet field around Burns there were thousands of "White Geese"; more than 18,000 SNOW AND ROSS'S GEESE (at least 4 Blue Geese) and a few hundred WHITE FRONTED GEESE. There were lots of WIGEON, PINTAIL and a few CINAMON TEALS. SANDHILL CRANES were calling (we saw more than 150) and we had great views of LONG BILLED CURLEWS. Down at the Narrows there was more of the same and 4 HERRING GULLS mixed in with RING BILLED and CALIFORNIA GULLS. In all we had about 64 species, but it was the geese that were the star attraction. Everywhere you looked where flocks of geese. Fantastic. The next ECBC trip will be towards the end of April to Smith Rock and Lower Bridge on the Deschutes.... there should be lots of migrants starting to come through and of course Eagles and wrens.... see http://ecbcbirds.orgSteve Dougill,Redmond, Deschutes Co., OR
