The Badlands Campaign Marches On
Curious about the Badlands Campaign? Join us on March 27th for a Badlands Brewery Crawl starting 5pm at Silver Moon Brewery
Our Green Corps coordinators have been burning the midnight oil on the Badlands Wilderness campaign. If you live in Bend you may have already noticed a crop of yellow signs saying "Protect Badlands Wilderness" in the yards of homes and businesses. If you want to plant one of these in your yard stop by our offices at 37 1/2 NW Irving Ave in Bend to grab one or more!
If you really want to make a difference, submit a comment to Senator Wyden and tell him that you support the designation of the Badlands as Wilderness. Comments can easily be submitted from our website:

Join ONDA to Protest Against Proposed Hydroelectric Projects on Summer Lake and Abert Rim
Abert Rim Comment Deadline March 31st Summer Lake Comment Deadline April 4th
NT Hydro, an Idaho based development firm, has applied to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a preliminary permit that might lead to construction of two pumped storage hydroelectric projects on Summer Lake (docket P-13050) and on Abert Rim (docket P-13054). Summer Lake and Lake Abert are closed basin alkali lakes that provide vital habitat for migrating and nesting birds, including the threatened Snowy Plover. The projects propose reducing the water levels of these lakes by up to 10% on a daily basis and in turn greatly affecting their delicate ecology. Moreover, the construction and operation of the required large pumps and turbines, and the associated pipes, tunnels, substations and transmission lines, would intrude directly on two designated Wilderness Study Areas (see Summer Lake map or Lake Abert map).
In today’s energy climate ONDA recognizes the need to explore alternate energy sources. However, it makes no sense to site such projects in a fragile desert environment where they would do incalculable environmental damage while actually consuming more electricity than they produce. Pumped storage systems are designed for energy storage, not net energy production. To generate energy the alkali waters would be pumped uphill during the night when electric rates are low, stored in a reservoir, then released during the daytime to generate electricity when rates are high, resulting in a net loss of energy to the electric grid, but a profit to the operating company from the difference between the two rates.
We hope you will join us in submitting comments to the FERC in protest of these projects. We encourage you to customize your letter to protest against these damaging hydroelectric projects.
