I birded Haugen Road in westernmost Yamhill County this morning. Quite
birdy, lots of FOY species for me, though nothing unusual (no Poorwill,
for example!). This road takes off south at the Rex Hill summit of 99W
between Sherwood and Newberg, going up a very patchy north-facing slope
up to join Parrett Mtn. Road. This has been an easy-access transect
I've birded for over twenty years, mostly spring migration. In general
species diversity has slowly declined as deforestation has spread (e.g.,
haven't seen Ruffed Grouse since late 1980s I think it was), but it
remains a good area for migration, especially in the more mature mixed
broadleaf maple/doug fir patches.

[I have been surprised this spring to have heard no roving bands of Red
Crossbils yet; most years they seem to be around.]
