The two species I most often hear singing at night this time of year are White-crowned Sparrow and YB Chat. I usually hear Chats singing in bright moonlight (we are currently in the dark phase of the moon), and usually later into May and June. I have heard WC Sparrows at night recently. The only thing I can think of that sounds remotely like a Whipoorwill, other than Mockingbird, would be California Quail, which I personally don't recall hearing at night.

I'd be interested to know if you figure out what you are hearing.

Subject: [obol] Need ID Help: Mystery Bird Singing at Night

For more than a week, there has been a bird singing a
melodious little tune outside my bedroom window far
after dark, some nights more actively than others. I
live in a residential neighborhood in Newport so I'm
sure the possibiities are limited. There are quite a
few trees in our backyard. It definitely is not an
owl. At first, I thought maybe it was a Whip-poor-will
but it doesn't sound quite like the Whip-poor-will I
had in my yard in Florida but somewhat similar. Like
the Whip-poor-will in Florida, it does seem to be
singing later and later as time goes on. Whatever it
is, I'm enjoying it. It's quite musical.

Could you guys please send me a list of possibilities
to help me figure this out.

  Cindy Ashy.
