Here's some preliminary results from the Benton Co. Migratory Bird Count
held on Sat. May 10th.
A total of 114 species were seen. Good finds were:
Dusky Flycatchers (Willamette Park and a Corvallis backyard)
Grasshopper Sparrows at the Finley Prairie
Black-necked Stilt - McFadden Marsh (Finley)
Red-necked Phalarope - Finley/Bruce Rd
Gray Jay - McDonald Forest
A total of 5 Nashville Warblers were seen by 4 different parties so they
were quite well-spread throughout the county. I also was surprised to see 8
Lazuli Buntings together on 2 adjacent small trees. 7 of them were males
and they made a very colorful display.
Relatively few ducks or shorebirds were seen. This was partly because the
main section of Finley NWR (Finley Rd. incl. Cabell Marsh) and the Philomath
Sewage Pond weren't covered (my fault as coordinator!). However, other
wetlands incl. McFadden Marsh, E.E. Wilson, Toketie Marsh, Stewart Lake and
the Evergreen Mitigation ponds had surprisingly few waterfowl or shorebirds.
There were also several other odd misses (number of times seen in previous
11 counts):
Ring-necked Duck (10)
Northern Shoveler (9)
Hooded Merganser (9)
Ring-necked Pheasant (10)
Sharp-shinned Hawk (7)
Greater Yellowlegs (8)
Belted Kingfisher (9)
Least Sandpiper (6)
Western Kingbird (8)
Hermit Warbler (11)
Western Meadowlark (11)
Some birds were missed that have been seen recently, such as Black Phoebe,
Northern Rough-winged Swallow and Yellow-headed Blackbirds.
If you birded in Benton Co. on Saturday, May 10th, I'd appreciate receiving
your bird count - this includes yard counts.
Thanks,
Marcia F. Cutler
