The 2008 Spring North American Migration is in the can and a very successful
season it was. I am estimating that we will receive data from 30 of
Oregon's 36 counties. Soon, I hope to be able to report data from every
county. With 18 counties in, I thought it would be interesting to let the
birding public know of some of the results. I will publish a full
accounting of the event in an upcoming edition of Oregon Birds Magazine.

The top counties so far are:

(BY SPECIES) Deschutes (175), Coos (166), Douglas (159), Baker (149),
Harney (149), Lake (145), Linn (145)
(BY PARTICIPANTS) Deschutes (29), Baker (26), Lake (16) Curry (11), Yamhill
& Crook (9), Coos (8)
(BY SPECIES PER PARTICIPANT) Hood R. (71), Grant (59), Wheeler & Wasco (46),
Jefferson (26), Harney (24.83)
(BY TOTAL BIRDS) Harney (20416), Yamhill (19991), Tillamook (17988), Curry
(13582), Deschutes (12484)

I would like to take this time to thank all the participants that donated
their time, gas, sweat, and tears to make this count successful. I would
like to send out special kudos to the county coordinators who braved
spreadsheets, tardy data reporting, computer malfunctions, and a slightly
pushy state compiler to collect this year's data. Volunteers make this
count work and our volunteers deserve a thank you from all of you out there
in obol land.

We still need your help. In order for this count to be highly relevant, we
need more volunteers. The next count is on the 3rd weekend of September.
Set your calendars and contact your county coordinator so that you will be
able to help out next season. Better yet, check the ECBC website
(ecbcbirds.org) for counties that have no coordinator and take on the
challenge of designing an accurate and thorough count in an area you love.
You won't regret it. It will become the most enjoyable time of the year for
you and you will be contributing to our knowledge of the migration patterns
of birds in Oregon.
